Hair Drama? No Worries...

Instyle Magazine gave us some tips and tricks to find the best salons in our town. However, price is always a factor in how much we could possibly spend on a fabulous hair cut, trim, or color. Besides the Andy Lecompte Salon recommended who charges a minimum of $125.00 and above, we've decided to give you a few more choices in downtown Los Angeles, right by FIDM. Hopefully this will be helpful to new students who constantly ask if there is anything in downtown close by!

If you need some color in your hair, and a craving for a coffee, make your way over to Salon 11 right next to Starbucks on 11th and Grand. Not only can they make your hair look fabulous, but they also do nails! (Kim swears by her favorite stylist, Yvonne.)

For the men who just need a simple cut without paying the salon prices, you can pay $15 for a buzz at Rudy's Barbershop at The Standard Hotel in downtown. They also have a location in Hollywood.

Mandy Moore Gets Seriously Stylish with Lucky!

For Mandy Moore, 25, the end of a long, hot summer provides perfect fodder for giddy anticipation. "[Fall] is all about being cozy," says singer/songwriter, Moore. "I'm excited to break out my sweaters and finally buy those autumnal staples I've been wanting--like a leather jacket."

Featured for an astonishing fourth time on the cover of the September 2009 issue of Lucky Magazine, Moore pairs her trailblazing musical career with an eye for fashion just outside of her "comfort zone." A few of her fall choices, shown above, show a preference towards boho-chic styling, with equal marks of feminine luxury and edgy rock 'n roll. "At Long Last... More Mandy!"

"They think I'm very cute and so sweet... But that won't cut it anymore. I don't want to be a wallflower," says Mandy Moore.

So goes the touching and oft-revealing interview of the talented singer/song-writer, film star, and spokesmodel in the April 2009 Issue of Marie Claire. In her second cover issue for the magazine, the newly-married Moore touches on her now-rocker husband, and reveals her own coming-of-age struggle as an independent musician.

She also discusses her latest album, Amanda Leigh, which is slated for release on Storefront Records. The follow-up to Moore's acclaimed indie-album Wild Hope, the self-entitled offering is a deeply personal collection of music. 

"Mandy got to a place with her vocals that she's never been. ...I swear what she's doing is unequivocal. I don't think people will need to be convinced once they hear it," says her producer, Mike Viola.

If you want to hear a sampling of Mandy's album, the first single, "I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week" is available on iTunes now! The album, meanwhile, is slated for release May 26th, 2009, and is also available on iTunes for pre-order today.

I love fashion and I love writing, therefore I would LOVE to have a job writing for a fashion magazine.

In order to pursue that career, what school should I go to? And what should I major in?

Dear Camerynn:

Writing for a fashion mag or being a Fashion Editor seems the job everyone wants these days.

A really creative way to do it would be to attend FIDM for two years and get your Associates of Arts degree in a fashion-related subject, such as Merchandise Marketing, Visual Communications, or any one of FIDM's many fashion-related majors.

Then you would have great familiarity with the fashion industry and really understand how it works.

There’s much insider knowledge to be gained at a specialized fashion college such as FIDM!

Then you might want to transfer to a college that has a Journalism or English program and finish up your Bachelor’s of Arts degree in a writing-related major.

That would qualify you to write or work for a magazine.

Then you would have background in both fashion and writing, something that others competing for the same career opportunities wouldn’t have.

To employers, you would be a fashion/writing gem!

While you are at FIDM you could write for FIDM’s The Mode campus magazine, and when you were studying Journalism or English, you could contribute fashion articles to the school paper.

FIDM has arrangements with many schools so that FIDM units will transfer to various four-year colleges, which means you won’t have to take classes over again and you’ll have extraordinary fashion insights under your belt as well, something of which other Journalism students could only dream.
