Devonte Glover is our guest blogger today, reporting on some of his fave graphic tees! Devonte says...

Crew Factories, and my all time favorite, Macy’s. From prices ranging from as low as $8 to $45, which is a pretty good deal for good quality tees. So what are you waiting for? Go out and get swagged out for the summer with some of my favorite styles!

Meet the Team Behind Fashion Club: Senior Web Designer Marianne Leoncio

Marianne

Marianne graduated from FIDM with a degree in Graphic Design, and started as a work-study intern on Fashion Club in 2004. She’s been with us ever since. Score! She also art directs our fashion photo shoots!

Tell us a little about yourself: I started working as soon as I turned 15. I've had various jobs ranging from a Production Assistant at Kinkos to a Manager at a Swimsuit Store. My best job by far was interning here at FIDM. I learned so much as an intern. My mentors taught me everything from photography to coding HTML. My experience as an intern gave me a playground to determine my career direction. I graduated with a Graphic Design degree from FIDM, but through my internship fell in love with Web Design. Now I've been working on the FashionClub.com site for eight years! Time flies when you're having fun! :)

Tell us a fun fact about you that not many people know: Marianne's Fun Fact #682: I was briefly on an episode of MTV's TRL with Carson Daly. I had to introduce a video on their top 10 list. Looking back at it now, it was pretty embarrassing!

What inspires you? Everything inspires me! It could be the colors of a beautiful sunset or the latest Marc Jacobs collection. I could be taking a walk or browsing through my favorite fashion magazine. For me, inspiration comes in different forms. It's when you least expect it that you'll find it. I think that's what I love most about my job. Those "AaHa!" inspiration moments, where your vision meets creation. As a designer, it's a wonderful feeling.

What is your favorite thing about working on Fashion Club? Working with the most supportive and talented team. Everyone on our team has a voice and embraces each others strengths. Our monthly Starbucks brainstorm meetings usually start off with laughter and end in the same way.

What is your favorite FC article or section? My favorite section is FIDM Street Style. Alexis does a great job chasing down the latest trends from FIDM Students. I get so many fashion ideas from that section alone!

Share your secret fashion or beauty trick: At the beginning of every season I create a dream list of key fashion items I would like to purchase. This helps me to do less impulse buying. I am a sucker for a good sale, but what usually ends up happening is I end up with something I don't really want or need. By having a pre-set list, I end up with staple pieces that can last me a few seasons. Some of the items on my spring/summer 2012 list include a lucite clutch and anything leopard.

If you could be any fashion designer in history, who would it be? Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She may not have been a fashion designer, but she definitely was a fashion icon. Her timeless style and sophistication has carried on through years. From A-line dresses to her signature large round sunglasses, I loved her style!

Check back soon for more stories from the team behind Fashion Club!

Just Accepted Graphic Design Student is an Award-Winning Artist

IMG_5037Full Name: Quinn Palmer

Age: 18

Hometown: Concord, NH

Year in School: 12

FIDM Major: Graphic Design

FIDM Campus and Start Date: San Francisco, Fall 2012

Admissions Advisor: Jennifer Roach

Tell us a bit about yourself. I'm a self-taught digital artist and have been learning the trade for the last few years essentially from the internet. Two years ago, a friend of mine offered to buy a print of one of my pieces, and that sparked the proverbial lightbulb glowing brightly above my head: people would pay money for my artwork!

The next week I set up a website and began selling prints, and from there my website has evolved into having tons of products available to get the artwork printed on. I update the website every week with new artwork and new products whenever I can.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? Winning first place in the nation in a scholastic art competition with my piece, Cold Fury. Out of thousands of entries, mine was chosen to win not only a gold circle, but was selected as the best piece submitted overall.

What made FIDM right for you? Because I'm working on my artwork with a spin towards the business aspect, FIDM really stood out to me as a graphic design school that's very up-to-date in the industry and could also train me in the aspects of business I need to make my company really take off.

Describe your entrance project. My entrance project was also based around my business. I created a magazine cover for it, a large page advertisement, and a bag design with my logo on it. All of these designs featured my artwork.

What are your career goals? To continue my business on the side at the very least, if not as a
full time job, and to make a career for myself in the graphic design industry.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? A much better grasp of the aesthetics of graphic design and publicity.

Former FC Member Angelica Villegas Gives Talk at Escondido High School

DSCF7010Former Fashion Club Member Angelica Villegas, now FIDM Graphic Design Student, recently gave a talk to students at her alma mater Escondido High School. She addressed Fashion Design classes and the students were inspired by her story and how she created opportunities for herself while she was in high school.

FC Advisor Sharon Eichten says, "She is an amazing young gal who has grabbed every opportunity. She designed her career path throughout high school, and exhibited a high level of leadership and academic success."

When asked about her career goals, Angelica said, "Becoming a graphic designer is my plan, A-Z. I don’t see myself waking up every morning going to work not designing or translating concepts into visual reality."

Last year, Angelica won the FIDM National Scholarship Competition for Graphic Designer of Tomorrow.

Tell us a bit about yourself. I'm shy at first when I meet people. However, when I get comfortable around people, I tend to act like the hyper person I really am.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? Right now my proudest accomplishment is getting into FIDM. I was nervous throughout my interview, because I kept wondering, "What if I don't get in?" My mind was blown away when the director told me I was accepted into FIDM. I also recently created a logo for activities and events at my church.

What made FIDM right for you? The welcoming atmosphere at FIDM is what made FIDM right for me. I enjoy working in a place where I feel welcome instead of intimidated.

Describe your entrance project. My entrance project was creating a magazine cover, magazine ad, and a logo for a company. I picked a YouTube channel called Tobuscus as my company. I didn't know a thing about making magazines, but I got the job done and it turn out really well. I personally love the logo I made for the project. It has the right shade of red and black that made it stand out.

What are your career goals? I will never give up on my dream of working in Graphic Design and hope to have my own design agency in the future.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect FIDM to help me get out of my shell and help me speak in front of a large crowd. I also expect to learn how to improve my skills with Photoshop and drawing designs.

Just Accepted Graphic Design Student Wants to Work for a Design Firm

DSCF1648 Name: Crystal Chau

Age: 18

Major: Graphic Design

FIDM Campus and Start Date: Orange County Campus, Fall 2011

Admissions Advisor: Rose Mendez

Tell us a little about yourself. I am an open-minded free spirit who is always looking for new inspiration. Overall, I am a person who is constantly involved the arts, whether it be graphic design, drawing, writing, photography, or dancing. I am passionate in anything I take part in and I put my heart and soul into each activity.

Being a first-year high school graduate, I am quite new to the college life. Although I am not 100 percent sure of what to expect at FIDM, I am excited to find out what it's like to go to graphic design school, and eager to be a part of the friendly environment.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? A poem book that my grandpa helped me publish, including poems I wrote since I first started at age 12, and a novella I wrote for my senior English class which my grandpa also helped me publish. I never really took writing into consideration as one of my passions but over the years, I noticed how it came natural to me.

Another accomplishment I am proud of would be my four years of commitment towards Polynesian dancing.  Any type of dancing is pretty much second nature to me, but somehow Polynesian dancing stuck with me and I won a couple of competitions over the years.

What made FIDM right for you? I see FIDM as a school that was made specifically for me. Being the artsy child that I was, I did not know how I was to approach my future because I did not know which school to go to. After I graduated high school at Oxford Academy, I had my mind set to attending Fullerton College for two years then transfer to Cal State Fullerton.

However, a week before school starts, my mom suggested FIDM to me and my eyes instantly lit up. I usually do not make hasty decisions unless I am sure of what I want and this school just stood out and called for me to take a visit. I instantly decided to pursue a graphic design degree from FIDM.

Describe your entrance project. For my entrance project I had to create slogan and logo to be printed on a shopping bag, create a magazine advertisement, and create a cover for the store’s catalogue. I decided to create my own company called CRY$IS, which was a jewelry company with jewelry crafted from scrabble tiles. The slogan was “Prepare for the army of twenty-six,” as in the twenty-six letters of the alphabet, with an army/camouflage theme.

I also included the target market for my company. For the shopping bag, I had each letter, “C,” “R,” “Y,” “S,” and “I” on different bags. For the magazine advertisement, I took a picture of the word “crysis” on a scrabble board with necklace chains surrounding it and gave it a mysterious theme.  For the magazine catalogue, I created a cover for each season of the year, featuring a different piece of jewelry along with different colors for the camouflage background.

Necklace

What are your career goals? In the near future, I would like to be working for a design firm or more specifically, creating corporate identities or working for a magazine or clothing company. I would definitely enjoy the opportunity to freelance on the side. I still want to continue dancing in Polynesian shows as a way of making extra income as well as way of releasing my stress and just having fun.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM?
I expect to learn everything I need to know at FIDM that will help me succeed in life. With the necessary tools, skills, and experience from the instructors, I am certain that I will be guided down the right path.  I can’t wait!
