Inside Comic-Con 2012

Sunday marked the end of yet another successful San Diego Comic-Con International, the biggest and most anticipated multigenre expo on the West Coast! Guest blogging about the event, Fashion Club's very own Alexis Chong attended as Supergirl in a costume she put together herself!

Comic Con 2012-1
Everyone who has been to Comic-Con can tell you that to be one of the cool kids, you’ve gotta rock some nerdy garb. At least, that’s what went through my mind on Friday night when I was scrambling to both American Apparel and Target to put together a makeshift Supergirl ensemble of a red pencil skirt, a patent leather yellow belt, a kid's Superman tee (complete with detachable cape), and knee-high black boots. My boyfriend, dressed as Scott Pilgrim à la the Michael Cera movie, and I were itching to make the 2-hour drive from Los Angeles to San Diego in the wee hours of Sunday morning for the last of the 4 ½ day event.

Sure enough, SDCC did not disappoint! Though the crowds were more intense (and highly costumed) than when I attended last, they managed to jam-pack the San Diego Convention Center with more excitement and merch then ever. There was even a Grimm walk-through exhibit before we crossed the street to enter!

Many people had camped overnight during the week to see some of the more anticipated panels, especially Breaking Dawn: Part 2, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, and The Hobbit. I was way too excited to wait in the panel lines so we navigated through the multi-layers of the exhibition hall: Artist Alley, Video Game Demos, Toy Company Exhibits, and Movie Displays, not to mention the merch tables. Though in true Comic-Con fashion, we did wait in a couple of lines to score some freebies, but only after hunting down Robert Downey, Jr.’s armor for Iron Man 3 at the Marvel display, taking a picture with Mattel’s Hover Board prop replica from Back To The Future and a life-sized Maleficent vinyl toy, and of course, running into a female Cyclops from X-Men!

Comic Con 2012 - Dark Knight

One of my favorite parts of the convention was not even inside the building, but outside of the San Deigo’s Bayfront Park next door—the Batmobiles! In preparation for the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (in theaters this Friday, July 20), Warner Brothers had six of Batman’s glamorous rides on display, from Adam West’s Lincoln Futura to Christian Bale’s revamped Tumbler. Mind you, they were under intense security in the Batcave, and behind velvet ropes to prohibit anyone from jumping inside one and joy-riding away. Well, the thought did cross my mind!

Alexis Chong is a talented Graphic Designer for FashionClub.com and is an all-around super awesome individual.

Meet the Author: Style Section L.A.'s Erin Weinger

Style Section LA
Each year, the FIDM Library schedules a "Meet the Author" series with writers in the industry. The events are free and open to all students. Today, the students were treated to a conversation with Erin Weinger, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Style Section L.A., an LA fashion and style blog.

Erin began with sharing her story on how she got her start in the industry and how that led to launching a fashion blog. A few years back, she was interning at Angeleno Magazine when she took a trip to NY Fashion Week, and met LA Times Fashion Editor Booth Moore. Her conversation with Moore led to a job at the LA Times. She was only 23 years old. A year later she decided to start her own fashion blog with two business partners. And that's how StyleSectionLA.com was born.

Students took the opportunity to pick her brain on the subject of fashion in Los Angeles. Someone asked her what Los Angeles is missing. Her answer? "We are missing a fashion week." She went on to explain that there is room for LA's fashion week to grow into the type of fashion week that New York produces. She recognizes that LA is a city like no other. "I think we have it all for the most part. There are so many hidden gems here."

This led to a question about the types of subjects Style Section L.A. covers. Is it just fashion? No, it's not. They cover art, furniture, events, and so much more. Erin mentioned an article they wrote about Hadley Holliday, an L.A.-based artist whose been gaining lots of attention lately. Erin was proud to point out that Style Section LA. wrote about her long before some of the big publications in New York.

That being said, the question was asked, "Who else have you recently discovered?" Interior designer turned fashion designer Sarah Scott, based in Downtown L.A. Look for that article coming soon on Style Section L.A.
