Cache Prom

Fashion Club has partnered with Caché on our exclusive prom trends blog series. Here's what they have to say about prom accessories!

Great accessories can transform even a pair of overalls into a chic ensemble (well, almost). So don’t make the mistake of thinking your dress will speak for itself. Plus, picking shoes and jewelry and trying different hairstyles is half the fun!

That said, don’t overdo it. If you’re wearing a fabulous gown (which we know you are) your accessories should enhance, not overwhelm. Follow these simple guidelines and you’ll look Belle of the Ball beautiful.

Jewelry
If you're wearing a statement necklace, small stud-like earrings and a simple bracelet are best. If you're wearing chandelier earrings, skip the necklace altogether and wear bolder bracelets. If you're going for a classic princess look, try smaller sparkly earrings, a simple solitaire-style necklace and a single thin bracelet.

Clutch
More than just a way to carry your barest beauty necessities, the clutch can be a statement piece that brings a less elaborate dress to life or a subtle grace note that has people cooing over your pitch-perfect style. Pick something and easy to hold onto. Little, glittery bags can look like jewelry. Candy colors and polished metal are beautiful. But never match your shoe and bag color to your dress unless it’s black—too much matchy-matchy says bridesmaid.

Shoes
High heels, obviously! We know, they can be uncomfortable but they make your legs look longer and thinner, which is sexier, period. The thinner the sole and the spikier the heel, the greater the potential discomfort, so if you're no Carrie Bradshaw, choose styles with platforms under the ball of the foot, or a sturdier heel. An amateur on heels is easy to spot so practice at home in your dress and shoes! If you can’t make heels work, your best choice is a simple ballet flat in a metallic shade that complements your skin tone and looks practically invisible, like on a ballerina. Lastly, don’t mix metals: silver and gold jewelry and copper shoes is a recipe for fashion fail.

Hair
Up or down? That is the question. And you’ll want to answer it before the Big Night, because futzing with your hair makes innocent bystanders crazy draws attention away from amazing you. A sleek up-do shows off a long neck and decolletage for an elegant effect. Letting it fall naturally, with just a simple spray and wave, for example can be feminine and sensual.

Get it? Good. We’ll be back next week. Until then, happy prom prep!

Prom Night Purse Essentials
Fashion Club has partnered with Caché on our exclusive prom trends blog series. Here's what they have to say about prom night purse essentials:

Prom is one of those (rare) times when a girl can benefit from Boy Scout wisdom. Keep their time-tested motto in mind: Be Prepared! Don’t leave home on the big night without the following eight essentials:

1. Lip Gloss
Keep your lips kissable by carrying a gloss that will hydrate and refresh faded lip color as the night goes on.

2. Powder/Bronzer/Blush
After a few turns on the dance floor you’ll want to touch up your complexion so your shine isn’t about exertion, but dewy perfection.

3. Mini Hairspray
You may want to let your hair down but if you start the night with a chic updo, you’ll want a way to keep that loose mane tamed.

4. Bobby Pins
For keeping tricky strands in place or pinning up your locks for a change of look halfway through the night—the legendary bobby pin will make it look like the work of a pro.

5. Mini Hairbrush or Comb
Keep your tresses sleek and elegant, or backcomb them for a wilder look.

6. Nail Polish
The true perfectionist carries polish in the unlikely (but not that unlikely) case of chips or smudges.

7. Perfume
Don’t underestimate the power of fragrance. An intoxicating perfume can make anyone dizzy with desire, so keep yours handy and give yourself a spritz when you suspect a refresh is needed.

8. Mini Mirror
Carrying a pocket size mirror isn’t vain, it’s common sense. Don’t be the girl who colored her lips outside the lines or guessed how much blush to put on.

Cache Prom Makeup

Fashion Club has partnered with Caché, the only national specialty store offering prom dresses and accessories, on our exclusive prom trends blog series. Here's what Caché has to say about prom makeup:

You’ve found the perfect gown, splurged on those kitten heels you’ve had your eye on, and your favorite clutch goes with everything. But there’s a girl behind that outfit, and she should be seen. That’s where great makeup comes in.

Heavy eyeliner and a bright red lipstick make an impression, definitely. But getting done up right requires a little more savvy. To be fabulous from head to toe consider these makeup guidelines:

  • If your dress is simple, it’s fun to create drama with contrasting eye shadows and different shades of lip color. Don’t be shy, either—glitter and bright shades are your best friends when it comes to livening up a classic look.
  • If your dress does the talking with eye-catching embellishment or prints, keep cool up top with nudes and light shades to balance out the busy. Subtle shimmers with just a pop of lip color can work great too.
  • Experiment with something new. Makeup can totally transform a face so why not surprise everyone who thinks they know you by picking a lip color beyond your personal norm. Or by lining your eyes inside and out if you usually just do the top lid.
  • Beware of makeup stains on your prized possession. Though it’s tempting to put on your gown as soon as you’re out of the bath, it’s always best to “put on your face” first and carefully slip your dress on after. Don’t compromise your glow by showing up at the event with tinted foundation on your bodice!
  • Take selfies and get your smartest, most stylish girlfriends’ (or boyfriends’!) advice. They’re on your side—they’d better be!

One last thing: Remember that clutch we mentioned? Make sure you’ve got your lipstick in it when you leave for the event. And whatever other makeup essentials apply. Get it? Apply. Sorry, sometimes we just can’t help ourselves.

Cache Blog1

Fashion Club has partnered with Cachéthe only national specialty store offering prom dresses and accessories, on our exclusive prom trends blog series. Here's what Caché has to say about how to pick the perfect prom gown:

With so many terrific styles and a dazzling spectrum of colors to choose from, picking out a gown for prom can be tough going for even the most seasoned fashionista. Lucky for you, we know a thing or two about pairing beautiful young women with gorgeous dresses. Read on for our Fairy Godmother dress-picking secrets.

Before you spirit that sequined wonder off to the dressing room, take a look at yourself in the mirror. Identify your body type and consider what you may want to draw attention to or away from. Broad shoulders? Try a halter neck. Full hips? Cinch the waist and go with a full skirt. Long legs? Show them off!

Think about your skin tone and hair and eye color when choosing between ravishing reds and pastel blues. Don’t rule out the edgier metallics—rose gold and bronze can look stunning. And remember that flirty floral can feel just as right as fancy black and white.

So you’re probably not going to be wearing Valentino, but a budget doesn’t have to mean your dress looks cheap. Check out what your favorite celebrities are wearing on the red carpet, then look for similar styles that suit your wallet.

It takes glamour guts to make a bold statement, but at least consider some of this year’s more daring prom styles—you’ll less likely to turn up on the big night wearing the same gown as your best friend.

A strapless lilac chiffon number might turn heads in summer, but will turn you into a shivering mess on a cold night. So think about the season and the weather.

Your girlfriends think you look amazing, so who cares if the dress you’re leaning toward is a half-size too small? Close your eyes and take a deep breath. You can’t, can you? If you can’t breathe, you’re going to be uncomfortable, and it will be written across your face. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to suffer. True glamour comes from confidence.

The bottom line—when picking a dress, listen to your heart but don’t forget to use your head. Keep our tips in mind and make the shopping an enjoyable adventure. It’s your prom, and you’re going to look beautiful.
