After a serendipitous meeting at Phoenix Fashion Week with a student at FIDM, Tiehen Watkins learned about Fashion Club, which prompted her to start one at her school. Her club motto is "Combining Fashion Sense With Sense of Community," and they recently organized a hygiene kit drive for the homeless, which gained the attention of the local news.
"Last October I went to Phoenix Fashion Week with my mom. I met new up-and-coming designers and a student at FIDM, Catherine Rejano, who was there representing Shawl Dawls. I talked to her and told her I wanted to be a fashion designer. She asked me if I had ever heard of FIDM. I said yes and that it was my dream school. She said that when she was in high school, she joined Fashion Club, and if my school had one I should get involved. When I told her our high school did not have a Fashion Club, she gave me tips on how to start one and how to have FIDM sponsor it. So I went on the FIDM website, printed the forms, got an advisor, and talked to my teachers, friends, and administration; I guess you could say the rest is history."
