Legendary Graffiti Artist SABER Talks -- And Paints -- At FIDM Los Angeles
Legendary Los Angeles graffiti and fine artist SABER spent the day at FIDM, painting a graffiti panel on the grass in Grand Hope Park, signing his new book Mad Society, and giving a slide show/lecture of his work.
"It's all about freestyle," he said as he stroked paint on the canvas. "I don't know what it is 'til I get to it!"
Saber spoke of growing up in a creative environment where both parents were artists, and becoming focused on graffiti art at the age of 12. He laughingly told stories of his and his friends' adventures (and misadventures) putting graffiti on walls, bridges, and trains all over the world.
Saber calls graffiti art "the largest art movement in the history of time." From L.A. to Tokyo to Moscow, there are graffiti artists who know each other and network.
As graffiti art struggles to survive -- pieces on walls are impermanent and are usually gone within ten years -- Saber stresses to young would-be artists that tagging is not the same as graffiti art, and reminds them that any defacing of property is a felony.
Saber puts his art on canvas as well. The FIDM Museum & Galleries is hosting an exhibition of Saber's fine-art paintings of downtown L.A. landscapes which will be up for another week.
Saber stressed to the audience of FIDM Graphic Design and other students, "When you're a creative person and you're blocked, you just have to go at it and attack it!"
